This just in: Kim Jong Il has pancreatic cancer

According to, South Korean leader Kim Jong Il has pancreatic cancer. He's 67.

It feels like so many celebs and public figures are coming down with pancreatic cancer: Patrick Swayze. Steve Jobs. Ruth Ginsberg. And now Kim Jong Il. Do you think pancreatic cancer is more prevalent, or do you think there's just more awareness around it?

  1. I just lost my mom to pancreatic cancer, and I do not think that it is more prevalent OR has more awareness. For example, did you know that one of the leading causes of pancreatic cancer is SMOKING? Or that only about 12% of people go into remission, with about 98% dying from the cancer within five years after they go into remission. I would have to say that there is NOT enough awareness about this type of cancer.

In my opinion, there needs to be more awareness about the super agressive types of cancer, like pancreatic cancer.

  2. Hi Fyre. I understand your anger about there not being enough awareness for such a deadly disease. What do you think is the best way to make people more aware?

  3. I'm also very sorry to hear about your mom.

  4. Hi Marisa. I'm sorry I lashed out a bit there. It's been a really trying week, and I would give anything for a bit of advice from my mom. I am also sick and tired of only hearing about the (can be) less agressive cancers like breast cancer or skin cancer, and not finding any forthcoming information about the agressive cancers like pancreatic. It's frustrating, and from your own experience with your mother, you know how elusive finding the agressive cancers can be.

I've taken an idea from the Canadian Cancer Society to hold a Girl's Night In for Cancer. Instead of spending your money out, you take what you would have spend on dinner, dancing, movie, etc, and make a donation instead. I've asked around a bit to see if there is interest, and it it ends up being popular, I'll hold an event every few months; as a uni student, it can to be rather busy with school/work/sem-social life :)
